Can I Reuse the Same Direct Debits for Multiple Bank Switches?
Updated September 2026 · 5 min read
Quick answer: Yes. Your Direct Debits transfer automatically every time you switch via CASS — you don't need to set up new ones for each switch. The same two Direct Debits can support switch after switch.
If you're planning to switch banks more than once, a natural question comes up: do you need brand new Direct Debits every time, or can the same two just keep moving with you? The answer is genuinely simple, but worth understanding properly.
How it actually works
The Current Account Switch Service (CASS) automatically transfers your Direct Debits, standing orders, and balance every time you switch — that's the entire point of the service. So if you switch from Bank A to Bank B, your two Direct Debits move with you. When you later switch from Bank B to Bank C, those same two Direct Debits move again. You're not setting anything up fresh each time; the mandates themselves persist and simply travel with you.
What actually counts as "active"
Most banks require your Direct Debits to be genuinely active, not just present. Based on published guidance, a Direct Debit is generally considered active if it has collected a payment within the last 13 months — or, if it's never collected a payment yet, if it's less than 13 months old. This is a useful benchmark to keep in mind: as long as your Direct Debits are genuinely being used (not sitting dormant for over a year), they should continue to count as active through repeat switches.
This is exactly why a BeSwitchReady membership works well for repeat switching. Your two Direct Debits collect a genuine £0.99 payment every month, so they never approach that 13-month dormancy point — they stay demonstrably active switch after switch, without you having to think about it.
Do I need to do anything extra between switches?
No. As long as your Direct Debits remain active (genuinely collecting payments), they'll keep transferring automatically with each CASS switch. There's no separate re-authorisation step, and no need to cancel and recreate them between switches.
What could stop them working for a future switch
- Cancelling a Direct Debit between switches — this genuinely breaks the chain, and you'd need to set up a replacement
- Long dormancy — if a Direct Debit stops collecting payments for an extended period, some banks may not count it as active
- Bank-specific exclusion rules — separate from the Direct Debit question entirely, most banks won't pay a bonus if you've held an account with them recently, regardless of your Direct Debit status
Direct Debits that stay active by design
BeSwitchReady's two Direct Debits collect a genuine payment every single month, so they never risk falling dormant between switches — ready for your next offer whenever you are.
