How many times can you switch banks?

Updated June 2026  ·  5 min read

One of the most frequent questions from new switchers is: can you do this more than once? The answer is yes — and with the right strategy, you can earn several hundred pounds a year from bank switching alone.

Can you switch banks multiple times?

Yes. There's no legal limit on how many times you switch banks in a year. The Current Account Switch Service (CASS) can be used repeatedly — it's a free, unlimited service.

The only constraints are set by individual banks through their offer eligibility rules, not by any law or regulatory limit.

How often can you claim the same bank's bonus?

Most banks allow you to claim their switching bonus once per customer, or once within a specified period — typically every 12–36 months. The exact terms vary:

  • HSBC — generally once per customer (check current terms)
  • NatWest — once per customer; must not have held an account as of 6 May 2026
  • First Direct — once per customer; no HSBC account since January 2018
  • Nationwide — once per 12-month period if you haven't held an account with them
  • Santander — available to new and existing customers; check current terms for repeat eligibility

How many switches can you do in a year?

With 25+ live offers available at any time and each CASS switch taking 7 working days, most active switchers complete 3–5 switches per year. The practical limit is often determined by:

  • The number of banks you haven't previously claimed from
  • The bonus payout timelines (typically 30–60 days after switching)
  • Managing which bank is your "active" account at any given time

Serial switcher tip: Keep a simple spreadsheet tracking which banks you've switched from, the date, and the bonus received. This makes it easy to track your eligibility windows and plan your next switch.

Does switching banks hurt your finances?

No — CASS guarantees that all payments, Direct Debits, and standing orders transfer automatically. Your salary will still land in the right place, and your bills will continue to be paid. There's a 36-month forwarding period on any payments that accidentally go to your old account number.

Keeping your Direct Debits active between switches

The one area where serial switchers run into trouble is Direct Debits. When you do a CASS switch, your Direct Debits should transfer automatically — but if a switch is cancelled or goes wrong, you can end up without active mandates and suddenly ineligible for your next target offer.

A BeSwitchReady membership solves this. Your two £0.99/month Bacs Direct Debits move with you through every CASS switch automatically, ensuring you're always eligible — no matter how often you switch.

Switch as often as you like — stay eligible every time

BeSwitchReady membership (£1.98/month) keeps two genuine Direct Debits active on your account through every switch. Our monthly newsletter also tracks which offers are live and advises on the optimal switching sequence so you never miss a bonus.
