How much can you actually make from bank switching?

Published 2 October 2026  ·  7 min read

Add up every live UK switching offer right now and you get a genuinely large number. But "if you claimed every offer simultaneously" isn't a realistic plan — exclusion periods, eligibility, and your own existing banking history all cut into it. Here's the honest number, not the headline one.

The headline number

£1,245 if you were eligible for every one of the 6 live offers tracked this month
BankBonus
Santander£240
first direct£210
HSBC£220
NatWest/RBS£200
Lloyds£200
Nationwide£175

That's the ceiling, verified against this month's live offers. Almost nobody actually hits it, for reasons worth being upfront about.

Why the real number is lower

  • Banking-group exclusions: NatWest and RBS are the same group — you can't claim both. See our banking groups visual for every grouping that cuts your options.
  • You've probably already banked with one or two of these. Most offers exclude anyone who's held an account with that bank recently, or claimed a previous incentive from them.
  • Direct Debit requirements aren't identical. Santander needs household-category Direct Debits specifically; Lloyds needs 3, not 2. Not every offer is equally easy to qualify for off the back of a standard switching setup.
  • Timing. Santander's £240 closes 7 October — miss it, and the realistic ceiling drops to around £1,005 until a replacement offer appears.

A more realistic number: the first-timer

If you've never switched before and have no exclusions anywhere, a genuinely achievable first pass through the market looks like 3–4 of the 6 live offers — call it £650–£850 over a few months, spaced out to avoid stacking too many credit searches at once.

A more realistic number: the repeat switcher

Our worth-it analysis found most serious switchers manage 3–5 genuine switches a year, limited by how many banks have offers they haven't already claimed. At current average bonus values (roughly £200–£210), that's a realistic £600–£1,000 a year, repeated annually as new offers replace old ones — not a one-off, but not nothing either.

Couples note: most offers are assessed per person, not per household — so two individual accounts switching separately can often both claim. See our guide for couples for how that roughly doubles the household total.

What it actually costs you

Beyond the Direct Debit requirement itself (which BeSwitchReady covers for £1.98/month), the real cost is time — roughly 15–20 minutes of active effort per switch, plus a short wait while CASS does the work. On a £200 average bonus, that's a strong hourly return by almost any measure, and the bonuses themselves are tax-free in the UK.

FAQ

Is £1,245 realistic for one person in one year?

Not usually — banking-group exclusions and prior banking history mean most people are eligible for a subset of live offers, not all of them. Treat it as a ceiling, not a target.

Do these bonuses get taxed?

No — cash switching incentives aren't treated as taxable income in the UK, unlike savings interest.

How do I know which offers I'm actually eligible for?

Check your own banking history against each bank's exclusion terms and the group mapping in our banking groups guide, then check the full eligibility database for the detail on each live offer.
