Can I switch banks with no Direct Debits?

Updated June 2026  ·  6 min read

This is one of the most common questions we get — and the short answer is: technically yes, but practically no. Here's why, and what to do about it.

What most banks actually require

The vast majority of UK bank switching offers require you to have at least two active Direct Debits at the point of switching — or to transfer two Direct Debits across as part of the CASS switch. Without them, you simply won't qualify for the bonus.

Some banks are slightly more flexible — allowing you to set up two new Direct Debits on your new account within 30 days of switching — but this is the exception rather than the rule. Most require them to be in place before you switch.

Why do banks insist on Direct Debits?

Banks use Direct Debits as a signal that you're a genuine, active current account user. Someone with two or more mandates is paying real bills — utilities, subscriptions, insurance — from that account. That's the customer banks want to acquire. Without Direct Debits, you look like someone who's just there for the bonus.

What if I genuinely have no Direct Debits?

This happens more often than you'd think. Common reasons include:

  • Paying all bills by card or bank transfer
  • Previously switching banks and losing Direct Debits in the process
  • Moving to a new country or starting fresh with a new account
  • Being young and not yet having regular monthly bills

In all these cases, your options are the same: set up two genuine Direct Debits before switching.

How to get two Direct Debits quickly

The fastest options:

  • BeSwitchReady membership — two genuine Bacs Direct Debits of £0.99/month, set up in minutes via Stripe. Purpose-built for exactly this situation.
  • Switch a regular bill to Direct Debit — contact your energy, broadband, or mobile provider and ask to switch your payment to Direct Debit. Usually takes 5–10 working days to activate.
  • Set up a charity donation by Direct Debit — many charities accept small monthly donations by Direct Debit, which count towards switching eligibility.

Important: Not all recurring payments are Direct Debits. Continuous Payment Authorities (used by many subscription apps) and standing orders are not the same thing and won't satisfy the requirement. Check your banking app — genuine Direct Debits appear under a "Direct Debits" section, not just "Payments."

How long do you need to wait after setting up Direct Debits?

This varies by bank and offer. Some require the Direct Debits to have been active for a set period before switching; others simply need them in place at the point of switching. Always read the specific offer terms. As a general rule, setting up your Direct Debits at least one full billing cycle (30 days) before switching is the safest approach.

BeSwitchReady — the purpose-built solution

BeSwitchReady is a bank switching membership that maintains two genuine Bacs Direct Debits of £0.99/month on your account. Set up takes about two minutes. Once active, they satisfy the Direct Debit requirement for virtually every UK switching offer — permanently, for as long as you're a member.

Your membership also includes monthly guidance on the best live switching offers, so you know exactly when and where to switch next.
