How to switch banks and keep your Direct Debits

Updated June 2026  ·  6 min read

One of the most common worries about switching banks is what happens to your Direct Debits. The good news: if you switch via CASS, they transfer automatically. Here's exactly what happens and what to watch out for.

What happens to Direct Debits during a CASS switch?

When you switch using the Current Account Switch Service, all your Direct Debits transfer automatically to your new account on switch day (day 7). Your new bank takes on the mandates, and collections continue from your new account without interruption. You don't need to contact any organisation you pay by Direct Debit — it happens automatically.

Will there be any missed payments?

In the vast majority of cases, no. CASS is designed to ensure continuity. However, there is a small risk that a Direct Debit collected in the window immediately around your switch date could cause a timing issue. To minimise this:

  • Avoid initiating a switch within 5 days of a Direct Debit collection date
  • Keep sufficient funds in both accounts during the transition period
  • Check your new account after the switch to confirm all DDs appear correctly

If anything does go wrong, the CASS guarantee means your bank must reimburse any charges or losses immediately.

BeSwitchReady Direct Debits: Your two £0.99/month BeSwitchReady Bacs Direct Debits transfer automatically with every CASS switch, just like any other Direct Debit. They continue from your new account without interruption — keeping you permanently eligible for your next switching offer.

How to check your Direct Debits transferred correctly

After your switch completes:

  1. Log into your new banking app
  2. Navigate to "Payments" or "Direct Debits"
  3. Confirm all expected mandates appear — including your BeSwitchReady Plan A and Plan B
  4. If any are missing, contact your new bank — they're obligated under the CASS guarantee to resolve it

What about Continuous Payment Authorities (CPAs)?

Continuous Payment Authorities — used by many subscription apps, streaming services, and online retailers — are not Direct Debits and do not transfer automatically with CASS. You'll need to update your card details with these providers separately after your switch. This is a common source of confusion and missed payments, so check your old statements for any CPA-based subscriptions before switching.

Will my new bank honour my existing Direct Debit mandates?

Yes. Under CASS, your new bank is required to honour all transferred Direct Debit mandates as if they were set up directly with them. There is no need to re-authorise anything.

Stay permanently eligible through every switch

Because your BeSwitchReady Direct Debits move automatically with every CASS switch, you never have to worry about resetting your eligibility after switching. Your two mandates follow you from bank to bank, keeping you ready for the next offer.
