Best bank switching order UK 2026

Updated June 2026  ·  6 min read

If you're serious about earning from bank switching, the order you switch in matters. Claim the wrong offer first and you might lock yourself out of a bigger bonus later. This guide sets out the optimal switching sequence for 2026.

Why order matters

Most banks have eligibility windows — periods during which you can't claim their bonus again if you've already received one. Some also exclude people who currently hold accounts at affiliated banks (for example, Halifax, Lloyds, and Bank of Scotland are all part of Lloyds Banking Group). Switching in the wrong sequence can accidentally disqualify you from a future offer.

The optimal June 2026 switching sequence

Switch 1: HSBC — £500

Start with HSBC. It's the highest bonus available right now. HSBC and First Direct are part of the same group — once you hold an HSBC account, you'll be ineligible for First Direct, and vice versa. So pick one first; if First Direct is more appealing long-term, start there instead. But for pure bonus value, HSBC wins.

Switch 2: NatWest — up to £250

After completing your HSBC switch, target NatWest. It's a strong ongoing offer with no imminent deadline. NatWest and Royal Bank of Scotland are in the same group, so switching to NatWest rules out RBS — factor that in if RBS has a live offer.

Switch 3: First Direct — £200 (deadline 29 June 2026)

If you haven't used HSBC as your first switch, First Direct should be your next priority — but note it must be completed before 29 June 2026. First Direct also has a reputation as one of the best everyday banks in the UK, so many switchers stay here longer term.

Switch 4: Nationwide — £175 or Santander — £180

Both are solid offers with no urgent deadlines. Santander's £17/month account fee reduces the net value, so Nationwide wins on pure bonus if you've not held one in the last 12 months.

Switch 5: Bank of Scotland — £175 (deadline 29 June 2026)

If you haven't previously received a BoS bonus since January 2023 and you're not switching from Halifax or Lloyds, this is worth fitting in before 29 June.

Key principle: Always check group affiliations before switching. Banks within the same group often share eligibility rules. Common groups: HSBC/First Direct, Lloyds/Halifax/Bank of Scotland, NatWest/RBS/Ulster Bank.

How long between switches?

Each switch takes 7 working days via CASS, and most bonuses are paid 30–60 days after meeting conditions. In practice, you can complete a new switch every 6–8 weeks — meaning 4–5 switches per year is achievable for an active switcher.

What about your Direct Debits between switches?

This is where most people lose momentum. When you do a CASS switch, your Direct Debits transfer automatically to the new bank. But if a switch goes wrong or you cancel prematurely, you can end up with no active mandates — and suddenly you're ineligible for the next offer.

A BeSwitchReady membership solves this permanently. Your two £0.99/month Bacs Direct Debits transfer with every CASS switch automatically, keeping you eligible for the next offer without any admin.

Your switching strategy, simplified

BeSwitchReady membership (£1.98/month) maintains your two Direct Debits across every switch, plus sends you a monthly newsletter telling you exactly which offer to target next — including deadlines, optimal sequencing, and step-by-step claiming instructions.
